  • Hello!Welcome to the inkscape gallery web-site, i'm davide and with my company called nois3lab decided to bring back to the community what it gave to us, great software and beatiful workflow. So, that's it, use it, join us, post your work and link us

what is inkscape?

Inkscape is an open-source vector graphics editor similar to Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw, Freehand, or Xara X. What sets Inkscape apart is its use of Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), an open XML-based W3C standard, as the native format.

This is what you read in the f.a.qs in the official inkscape website: http://www.inkscape.org
Maybe some of you would like to have some explanations abuot what vector graphic is, so we'll try to do that now.

Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) is an open, industry-standard XML-based format for vector graphics developed by the W3C. Its acceptance is growing fast. Most vector editors these days can import and export SVG, and modern browsers (such as Firefox and Opera) can display it directly, i.e. without requiring any plugins. (For Internet Explorer, there's an SVG Viewer plugin from Adobe.) For more information, see #SVG topics below.

Same as before this is what you'll find in the inkscape web-site f.a.qs.
Maybe this is not what you exactly need to answer to the many questions you're mind is going to ask.
We'll try to do this in a different way:
consider this, you have a raster software like gimp or photoshop (you won't use this....it is proprietary!), you download an image from internet and you want to change it, maybe you're going to enlarge that image cause it was so small!
Yes, do it, but then try to recognize the image you already had...it will be not easy cause of the lower quality the image now have. What you did is just to enlarge every pixel in order to fit the size you needed, so you have big pixels coloured in raster graphic.

Try to do the same in inkscape, not with a raster image (it would be the same as before..) but with a vector painting. You can enlarge as much as you want, quality will be the same and this is because raster and vector graphics work in a very different way.

You don't have coloured pixels in vector graphics (even if the monitor do this to show you what you are painting..) but you have lines, curves and you can do what you want with them, they don't have a fixed size.

But this is the most relevant difference between this two "graphic" software we wanted to explain but there are many others.
This is not gonna be a complete essay about differences and features of raster and vector graphic, we just want to give you the basic knowledge to find the best practice when you decide to paint, to colour, to edit an image.

Inkscape does this as a vector tool, so you can use the best vector tool that probably is the bezier curve, you'll never find an easier tool to modify a shape, create your desired curves and lines, so this is a good point for inkscape.

Do you like the web2.0 graphic design?I mean, you certanly met a reflection or a liquid badge in some new web-sites or beatiful icons in your iPod (...too bad speaking about an Apple product).
Well these are typical paintings made with a vector graphic software so this is going to be, at least for web-design, a proficue use of inkscape. If you follow some tutorials from the relative section in this web-site you'll find very easy to paint such a reflected text or a liquid pin.

But really, vector and raster graphics and softwares work in a very different way so don't consider this as a war between this two and you're going to use both in many situations cause they give different but very useful tools.

What to say about inkscape as a vector graphic software? Maybe you already know the most famous vector software that is Adobe Illustrator, what about compairing this whith inkscape?
...Inkscape is free (not just as a free beer...), probably it is not ready to fully run against illustrator but certanly is getting better day after day and it is the best vector software in the open-source environment.

So, download it, install it, follow some tutorials and do your first work. We'll be happy to have you here in inkscape gallery!!
